I'm sick, I keep trying to tell myself I'm not sick, but I am. My head is now swarming with visions of flying bacon from the cold medicine. Okay maybe not but wouldn't that be cool. Hi Bacon Guys,

Thanks for the great invention of bacon day! We had a really good time this afternoon. It wasn't as big as we hoped for (around 40). The weather was good although the wind was really strong. So we had to improvise wind shields for the little cooking pits. We actually used huge iron bins that could be openend to make little grill rooms. People looked a bit odd though since no one knows about Bacon Day here so we did get some strange looks. Pedestrians weren't easily persuaded to try bacon, so that didn't really work. We ate and grilled tons of bacon thanks to our sponsor. Next year its going to be bigger, now the preparations and pr started like 4 days before Saturday. But I'm still very please with my very first bacon day celebration. I also believe some intresting recipes ideas came out of it. Once again I'd like to thank our sponsor "de groene weg slager" in Utrecht. Thank you Gerrit Takke without you we wouldn't have enough bacon. When I left home this morning I knew I had forgot something, actually I almost forgot the bacon. But once I arrived at the park I noticed I had forgotten the camera, so I wasn't able to make pictures.

1. In Australia - I think we might be the first (one in Newcastle and possibly one in Sydney unless there are more that I don't know about), thanks to our location to the date line, but let us know if you think you might beat us... Any Kiwi's out there celebrating?

2. Boulder CO - There are a couple, but one of them is going to be a week late due to a grant review. It's a shame when things like a real job get in the way of Bacon. (I've also heard that Tee and Cakes might be doing something, so more when I learn more.)

3. Chicago IL - Two of the Bacon Boys, Seth and Evan, will be doing an interview with Nick Digilio on WGN They do stream live, so listen in. The Boys should be on at around 10:30 CT (so that's GMT -5:00).

4. The Netherlands - And this sounds like it is going to be a BIG one! I can't wait to hear more about what Reinout has planned.

5. Santa Barbara CA - Of course we can't forget our good friends at the Royal Bacon Society With out them, I doubt that Bacon Day would be any where as close to big as it seems to have gotten.

6. The Tampa Tribune FL - They are going to share photos with us hopefully! We need photos for the photo of the week if you haven't noticed. I've made sure to invite all my photography buddies hoping that they'll let us use a few, all for the good of bacon of course.

7. Boston MA - Seth just moved there, like Mon. So if you are in the city and smell bacon cooking, stop by and say "Hi, is this Bacon Day?", You might get a strange look, but I'd love to hear about his reaction!

8. Philadelphia PA - Social knitworking is doing a Drunken Bacon Podcast Brunch.

9. Assuming Toronto - They did put us in the article. Also we just got confirmation from Justin about a Bacon Day Party in Toronto.

10. Grinnell IA - A good friend of ours.

11. Portland OR - The 1st International Bacon Boy day of Art and Bacon Festival

12. LA CA - Sixteen Degrees of Craving Bacon - I bet they are throwing a party...

13. - Plsen, Czech Republic,This is the birth place of f pilsner style of beer, aka lager. Just think about one of the best combinations.

14. Belo Horizonte Brazil - They are having two simmetrical dinners in two different cities. One with bacon chicken wings, and another in "belô" are having bacon strawberry cream, with hot fudge delight. MMMM that sounds delicious.

15. Berlin Germany - Zach and friends, Antother Grad student from Boulder CO whose moved away and brought Bacon Day with him.

No Name Premium Meats, according to twincities.com, gave Conan O'Brien the gift of chocolate bacon:

On Tuesday, "The Tonight Show" received the bust — made of white chocolate with bacon for hair — and O'Brien did a segment with it Wednesday.

This would be so awesome to see. I've seen the butter sculptures at the MN state fair, and I've seen them being carved, it's really very cool. I couldn't easily find a photo, but I found this.

Bacon Day is off and running in Oz

We just officially finished breakfast and are starting to make lunch. We had bacon cups and bacon sushi; yes, we had sushi for breakfast. It was amazing and with enough leftovers we will probably have it for lunch as well.

For lunch we're trying Bacon Beer Cheese soup to go with our BLTs and some other great concoctions that people are making but I don't yet know what they are.

The reason I'm posting is because of a comment. Ross, an optometrist, has to work today, but he is greeting all his patients with "Happy International Bacon Day." This is great. I hope that you find bacon for all your meals, and thanks for celebrating how you can!

Wright Brand Bacon Bytes with Aaron McCargo Jr.

So I've never tried this bacon brand, but this recipe is one of my favorites. We've posted a variation of this which we've done I think every Bacon Day, but instead of scrambling the eggs, we just crack one straight in.

Here is their recipe

Bacon, Egg and Cheese Cups
Recipe Courtesy of Aaron McCargo and Wright Brand Bacon

Recipe serves 6

Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 40 minutes

Ingredients
12 strips uncooked Wright® Brand Smoked Bacon
1 ½ cups chopped fresh white button mushrooms
4 large eggs
1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme or oregano
¼ teaspoon black pepper
½ cup shredded Swiss cheese
Non-stick cooking spray

Preparation Instructions:

1. Preheat oven to 400°.
2. While oven is preheating, cook Wright® Brand Smoked Bacon according to package directions until firm but pliable and not crispy. Remove bacon and set aside.
3. Reserve 1 tablespoon of bacon drippings in same skillet used to cook bacon and sauté mushrooms over medium heat for 6-10 minutes until golden brown in color. Set aside to cool.
4. Spray muffin tin with non-stick cooking spray. Cut six strips of cooked bacon into quarters. Place one full strip of cooked bacon around the side and two quarters of a strip in the base of each of six muffin cups in a muffin tin. Use your fingers to press overlapping ends of bacon together.
5. In a large bowl, beat 4 eggs and whisk in mushrooms, chopped thyme and black pepper.
6. Pour the egg mixture in equal portions in the muffin cups lined with bacon, about ⅔ full in each cup. Sprinkle equal portions of shredded Swiss cheese into the cups and top each with two quarter strips of bacon.
7. Place filled muffin tin in oven and bake for 20 minutes, or until egg is completely set, cheese is melted and tops are browned.
8. Remove muffin tin from oven, use knife to loosen edges, serve and enjoy!

I'm going to try something like this in about 9 hrs. for our Bacon Day breakfast.

They also sent us a link to another video and recipe, Bacon Stuffed French Toast. I've heard from another blogger that this is amazing. I don't have any bread at my house, but I might just have to go out and get some.

Applewood Bacon-Stuffed French Toast with Citrus Maple Syrup

Recipe serves 6

Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 3 minutes

Ingredients
12 strips uncooked Wright® Brand Applewood Bacon
½ cup maple syrup
½ teaspoon orange extract
1 tablespoon orange zest
6 eggs
⅔ cup heavy cream
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
2 tablespoons vanilla extract
½ teaspoon salt
12 slices Texas toast

Preparation Instructions:

1. Cook 12 strips of Wright® Brand Applewood Bacon according to package directions. Allow to cool slightly, then break or cut each strip in half and set aside.
2. In a small bowl, whisk together maple syrup, orange extract and orange zest; set aside.
3. In a shallow dish or pie pan, beat eggs, cream, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla and salt, until blended.
4. Brush the top edges of 12 slices of Texas toast with the egg mixture. Add four half-pieces of bacon to the center of six slices of the Texas toast, and then top with the remaining slices of Texas toast, egg mixture side down, to make six “sandwiches.” Pinch the edges of each sandwich to seal.
5. Working with one sandwich at a time, dip both sides into the egg mixture and then cook in an oiled griddle or skillet (or the one used to cook the bacon) over medium-high heat, flipping halfway through, for a total of 2-3 minutes or until nicely toasted.
6. Place the French toast sandwiches on a plate, slice diagonally, drizzle with the syrup mixture and enjoy!

Bacon Day made the Chicago Tribune

We made it into a legitimate newspaper. Now, anyone in Chicago who gets the Chicago Tribune, did we make it into the print edition as well? I'd love to have a copy, but the online version is good to see. So here is the link. Their link to us doesn't seem to work, but that's okay, it's crazy that we were even mentioned. Who would have thought even a year ago that Bacon Day would have gotten this big?

The question is now, how many different countries (and states) will be celebrating Bacon Day this year? I think we might have to start a count.
1. US - Boulder CO, Boston MA, Chicago IL, Santa Barbara CA, Grinnell IA, Any where else?
2. AU - Newcastle NSW, Sydney NSW, ...?
3. We think Canada from the news stories but no confirmed reports.
4. ??? We haven't heard yet from the people who celebrated in the other countries from last year so we would love to hear from you.

The Nick Digilio radio show.

I found this just the other day: The Nick Digilio show from WGN in Chicago interviewed Stephanie Izard, winner of Top Chef Season 4. About halfway through, the interview starts talking about Bacon Day. They are holding a sold-out dinner on the 2nd (they wanted to make sure to be able to celebrate Bacon Day on the 5th) that will feature Bacon, 200 lbs of pork belly to be accurate. It's a great, fun interview, oh and they also like PBR.

Thanks for the plug and any recipe ideas would be great!

Oh one other thing, I found out that you can order pre-made bacon explosions but if you want it in time for Bacon Day, then you have to order quickly.

Bacon Day has made the news in Canada (Toronto)

The Daily Dish, Pierre Gagnaire's new restaurant, more Canadians eating out, International Bacon Day are helping to promote and celebrate Bacon Day. They send us to another great post at the Globe and mail.com where they have a wonderful photo of bacon being drizzled in chocolate. mmmmm. I know I've alread sort of made my menu for Bacon Day, but I think I might have to leave room for some additions.

Ya know, I've posted recipes which I made using American bacon (my favorite if only because it is easier to make things like the bacon mat with, and I grew up with it) and Australian bacon, but I don't have any recipes for other types of bacon out there like Canadian bacon, or English bacon. Does any one have some that they would like to share?

My Brothers Wedding & 1 week to Bacon Day

So today my younger brother is getting married. I'm glad they didn't choose next weekend as I don't think they are going to have bacon. So now that the wedding (will be probably by the time you read this or soon after) is done, the bacon day planning/setup can truly begin. So what do I plan to get? Lots of bacon! Although I have no idea what all my guests are bringing, this is what I'm planning on making so far.

Breakfast - The bacon and eggs in a muffin tin (they are my favorite!)

Lunch - not entirely sure yet but I think it might have to be a variation on the BLT

Afternoon snack - The Bacon-wrapped Jalapenos and Bacon Pops.

Dinner - Bacon-wrapped figs, Bacon Sushi, and I think I might have to try the Bacon Fondue

A recipe from Chris Doggett

I know Chris posted this in the comments for the bacon pop, but I wanted to make sure that no one missed this.

The cinnamon rolls are embarrassingly easy to make. And by 'embarrassing', I mean, I'd be embarrassed to write anything more detailed than this:

1.) Buy a tube of cinnamon roll dough at the store. The "jumbo" size work best (five to a package, I believe) as the rolls are big enough to really surround the bacon.

2.) Take 1 strip of bacon per cinnamon roll, and warm for about 5 minutes; the goal is to soften the bacon, not crisp it at all.

3.) Reserve the bacon, and throw in one or two new strips to cook fully. Once they're nice & crisp, reserve them, blot with a paper towel, & crumble.

4.) Take the pre-made dough & unroll it completely. Place the lightly-cooked bacon on the roll, and re-roll the dough. The top of the bacon will stick out over the dough, and you'll lose some cinnamon. Not an issue, really.

5.) Bake the cinnamon rolls according to the instructions, favoring the slightly longer baking time.

6.) Remove the rolls from the oven, add icing, and top with the crubmled bacon from step #3. The rolls may be served whole, or in halves; if cutting, use a sharp knife, as the bacon inside the rolls will still be soft.

Areas for improvement:
*Obviously, mixing in homemade dough would improve the end product

*Using cream-cheese frosting (ala Cinnabon) works well, but doesn't mix with the bacon grease as effectively as the cheaper shortening-based icing.

*Thick-cut bacon is actually less desirable than thin-cut; thick bacon remains 'chewy', even when the rolls are cooked to near-burnt.

*Peppered Bacon is a no-no. If you must use a flavored bacon, Maple bacon works quite well.

The end product is fattening as all hell. The bacon grease gets absorbed into the baking roll, and while some drips to the bottom of the pan, most of it gets absorbed. It's also very filling as a result. Roll + cup of coffee = full diner.

I haven't yet tried to make these, but maybe with the thick-cut bacon, microwave it till it's about half done, and that might help make it crisper, but thin bacon sounds wonderful with this!

Bacon Pops

Bacon Pops: a genius idea. I found these creations on Bacon Culture. All they do is take some goat's cheese, form it into a ball around a lolly pop stick, then roll it in bacon crumbs and seasoning. Okay so instead of making them into pops, I could see doing small individual balls and set it out as a cheese plate on Bacon Day. I think this might be my new favorite Bacon Day recipe.

We have started to be noticed by larger Bacon organizations, but somewhere along the line they have gotten wrong info about Bacon Day. The latest site is Porkmag.com.

First - This year is the 5th Anniversary of Bacon Day.

Second - I am a female; I know the name Alexa can be confusing, but I am a girl.

Third - There are many Bacon Boys who have helped create Bacon Day including (but not limited to) Seth, Evan, and Brandon.

Fourth - Bacon Day is open to everyone no matter if they eat bacon or not. We want Bacon Day to be inclusive and not exclusive.

Chicken livers with bacon

This I think sounds great, (from allrecipes.com) then again, I did just make my first pate and am excited but using chicken livers, they are incredibly cheap in Australia.

INGREDIENTS
says serves 2 but if you make it more as an appetizer instead of a meal, it should serve about 6.
1 pound fresh chicken livers
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon garlic powder
salt and pepper to taste
4 slices bacon

DIRECTIONS
1. Rinse livers, pat dry.

2. In a small bowl mix the flour, garlic powder, salt and pepper and add mixture to chicken livers.

3. Coat the chicken livers with the powder and set aside.

4. Place bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown, not too crispy as it will be cooked more later, but long enough so that you have quiet a bit of bacon grease.

5. Remove bacon, leaving bacon fat in skillet, and set aside.

6. Cook coated chicken livers in bacon fat covered over medium high heat until almost done, about 17 to 20 minutes.

7. Add bacon strips and cook together until chicken is cooked through and juices run clear.

Bacon stuffed mushrooms (with cheddar)

One of my favorite things is stuffed mushroom caps. I've made them in the past for Bacon Day, but here is a new recipe for them from allrecipes.com. It looks amazing.

INGREDIENTS
This serves 8, so for Bacon Day, you might need to really up the recipe!
3 slices bacon
8 crimini mushrooms
1 tablespoon butter
1 tablespoon chopped onion
3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese (I've used feta in the past and it's great!)

DIRECTIONS
1. Place bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium high heat until evenly brown (I find that crispier bacon is easier to deal with). Drain, dice and set aside.

2. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

3. Remove mushroom stems. Set aside caps.

4. Chop the stems of the mushroom and the onion.

5. In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Slowly cook and stir the chopped stems and onion until the onion is soft. I personally let them cook until they are caramelized, and some times add a bit of garlic, ginger, and or herbs (maybe basil, oregano, chives, or something even more exotic like wasabi: experiment and have fun with it) as well.

6. Remove from heat. In a medium bowl, stir together the mushroom stem mixture, bacon and 1/2 cup cheddar (or feta). Mix well and scoop the mixture into the mushroom caps.

7. Bake in the preheated oven 15 minutes, or until the cheese has melted.

8. Remove the mushrooms from the oven, and sprinkle with the remaining cheese.

This is a favorite of mine and I hope you enjoy it!

I found the other day that The AV Club has a number of great posts on bacon. The one the link goes to is their taste testing of many fun bacon products. They had a great way of making a bacon bloody mary. It sounds like they used bacon salt on the rim of the glass - this got some great reviews. I wonder how this would work for a margarita. Or maybe someone should make some bacon sugar and use that for - say - mojitos. Lime, bacon, mint, and sugar: what could be better?

10 things that aren't improved by bacon

Mehret Tesfaye is the creator of this list, and I have to agree with most of them, but I think I might have a few to add...

Bacon does not make:
1. oranges better. I love bacon-wrapped apples and bananas, but the oranges were just too odd for me.
2. pork crackling better. It is just too much fat all at once.
3. tea better.
4. vodka better, no matter what the internet tells you - or has some one found a way?

What do you guys think?

Bacon Blue Cheese

One of the surprise bacon dishes at Bacon Day two years ago was Buffalo Wing Bacon. It is incredibly easy to make, if you take the easy way, and why not? Find your favorite buffalo wing sauce and pour over cooked bacon. I'm sure someone could come up with a much better recipe, but why not keep it simple? The one thing we didn't have, though, was the traditional accompaniment of blue cheese dressing and carrots and celery to match. That is until I found this recipe the other week from food.rightpundits.com

Baked Bacon Blue Cheese Dip Recipe

8-10 slices bacon
1 pkg. cream cheese (softened)
2 cloves garlic (peel and mince)
2 & 1/ 2 Tbsp fresh chives, chopped (I used basil instead)
4-5-0z blue cheese crumbles
1/4 cup half and half

Directions:

Cook some crispy bacon and crumble.

In a pan, saute some garlic (optional).

Mix cream cheese and half and half until well blended and add your chives (optional), garlic (optional), bacon, and blue cheese crumbs.

Place in baking dish, cover and bake about half an hour. (I didn't bake and just served cold, but this would be an interesting option. It reminds me more of a artichoke dip then a blue cheese dressing.)

If you decided to bake it, remove from oven, let cool slightly and pour into serving dish.

Yes, I originally come from Wisconsin, home of cheese, Feingold, and more lakes then Minnesota... So I was excited to see what was at the Wisconsin State Fair this past summer. Chocolate covered bacon on a stick. Yes, it is now up there with mac and cheese on a stick, the pronto pup, and chocolate-covered bananas on a stick. It will be interesting to see if the MN state fair steals this idea for next year (or do you in MN out there know if they have already done this?). Knowing them, they will steal this idea just like they stole Favre... Okay, I love MN. I did my undergrad there and they do have a restaurant which has free bacon, but I am still torn over the fact that Favre went to the Vikings, of all the teams he could have traded to he had to go to the Vikings! It's like the MN North Stars moving to Texas.... I think I need to go eat some bacon for comfort.

I found this article about buying bacon in Australia from the age. I never knew there was such a difference in "Made in Australia", "Grown in Australia", and "Product of Australia". I will never be able to remember all the differences, which means that I might now have my incentive to only buy bacon from the local butcher. I'm not sure but I'm betting that other countries might have the same type of legalese so it might be a good idea to check it out and make sure you know where your bacon is coming from.

Bacon Relish

This sounds absolutely amazing. Bacon Relish from the Heavy Table.

Bacon Relish
makes ½ cup
4 strips bacon, cut into small pieces
1 c onion, diced
2 tbsp white wine vinegar
2 tbsp low sodium chicken broth
salt
Crisp bacon in skillet, then remove and drain on paper towels. Discard all but 1 tbsp bacon grease in pan then add onion and cook until soft and translucent. Add white wine vinegar, chicken broth, and bacon; cook until liquid has evaporated. Salt according to taste.

I think I'm going to have to make this next weekend when we have Tapas. I think I might stuff some mushrooms with it for some very bacony mushroom caps.

Tip for keeping bacon crispy in deserts

I found this wonderful tip on Scott Hutcheson's site about how to keep bacon crispy in deserts. Remove all the bacon fat! So simple. Also if you remember a few posts back about rendering bacon fat, these two can easily be combined. In order to get the most fat rendered out of the bacon, it's suggested that you cut your bacon into little chunks when you cook it. This will remove most of the fat from the meat. Then you can use these pieces of bacon in a desert while still getting the best for your rendered bacon fat. This is a wonderful idea and one that I plan to use this Bacon Day.

I found this nice photo driven recipe from Mark's Daily Apple. The recipe looks amazing.

If you are truly commited to getting the most out of your bacon fat then take a look at How to Cook Like Your Grandmother. A reader of theirs wrote in with very in-depth instructions which sounds easy but time intensive. They even suggest using this rendered bacon fat for making pie crusts. This might be a creative way to add yet another layer of bacon to the bacon Apple Strudel.

And if you want a way to add bacon to a classic dish, German Potato Salad, then check out epicurious.

If you live in the Santa Monica area I am Jealous. You live near FIG restaurant. On their brunch menu they have a whole section called Bacon and Sausage. This includes Sweet Corn Fritters with a Bacon Creme Anglaise and blueberry, Bacon Waffle a la mode with Bacon ice cream, and of course a BLT along with many other wonderful sounding bacon items. This also extends to the Booze section where they offer a Bloody Maria with a bacon rim and Eggs and Bacon, which is a Bacon infused Gin with lemon juice and egg whites.

I think I might have to try to get over to Santa Monica (101 Wilshire Blvd., Santa Monica. (310) 319-3111) to try some of these very inventive recipes.

Pat Lam has won the New Zealand Best Pie Award with his cheesy bacon and mushroom pie. So if you are in the Tauranga area of the North Island, then head on over to Gold Star Patrick's Pies to have this award winning pie. This sounds very interesting. I've had crackling, I have had pork rinds, I've had bacon flavored potato chips, but this sounds like something that needs to be tried.

According to Wikipedia

Chicharrón is popular in Andalusia, Spain, and in Latin America is part of the traditional cuisines of Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil (where it is called torresmo), Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Venezuela, and others. The singular form, chicharrón, is also used as a mass noun, especially in the Philippines where words do not have a pluralized form. They are usually made with different cuts of pork, but sometimes made with mutton. In Puerto Rico chicharrones are also made with chicken, in Argentina with beef, and in Peru with chicken or fish.
The pork rind type is the skin of the pork after it has been seasoned and deep fried. In Mexico they are eaten in a taco or gordita with salsa verde. In Latin America they are eaten alone as a snack, with cachapas, as a stuffing in arepas or pupusas, or as the meat portion of various stews and soups.

Nikas Culinaria Has a great recipe if you want to try making it your self. As the Royal Bacon Society points out, this is not technically bacon, but it might be a fun twist to add to the Bacon Day experience.

I found this recipe on live fire and it sounds amazing. The only thing I think I would change is that I might keep the apples raw and not cooked. I have to say a big thanks to the Royal Bacon Society. I just got an e-mail from them saying that the national pork board is trying to give them credit for bacon day, and they wanted to set the record straight. Yes Bacon Day was created by the Bacon Boys in Boulder CO, and the Blog was created to spread the word. We aren't too concerned with getting the credit for it, but we did, and still do, think that it would be fun to see Bacon Day become something like Towel Day, or Talk like a pirate day. A fun event that people look forward to, where friends and family get together to have a fun day cooking with bacon. Another effect that we've kind of hoped for is to influence the sale of Bacon on that weekend. We figured that would be a good judge of how many people are participating, but a very lofty goal that we just kind of joke about.

I have to say that if The Royal Bacon Society, Lords of Bacon, Bacon Today, and many other bacon sites didn't promote Bacon Day and our site, we wouldn't have many of our readers, or as many people enjoying Bacon Day. With that said they deserve a lot of credit as well, so thank you! Hopefully this will be the Biggest Bacon Day yet. Last year it was held in at least 6 countries, so lets try to make it to 10. Please let us know if you are celebrating, and from where so we can add it to the list.

A new take on Chocolate candied Bacon

This sounds amazing. I found this twist on the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck blog. I wonder if this could be made into an ice cream sandwich. Do you remember the Choco Taco? It was a waffle cone shaped like a taco stuffed with ice cream and then smothered in chocolate. I wonder if you could do the same thing with candied bacon instead of the waffle cone. I think it might be another thing to try.

Bacon Popcorn: a use for left over bacon grease

Part of Bacon Day is the viewing of an appropriate bacon movie, Tremors, Footloose, or maybe Frost/Nixon, or you could always go with Babe, piglets big adventure, or Charlotte's Web. In any case pop corn is always a good companion. So here is a recipe for bacon popcorn.

Serves 10
1/2 cup bacon grease
3/4 cup unpopped popcorn kernels
1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt, or to taste
3 tablespoons bacon bits (optional)
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese (optional)

Measure the bacon grease into a 6 quart pot and place over high heat. Add one or two popcorn kernels as testers. When the test kernels pop, add the rest of the popcorn and cover with a lid. As the popcorn starts to pop, shake the pan back and forth constantly to keep the unpopped kernels on the bottom where they can pop. When the popping slows down, remove the pan from the heat and let it finish popping.

Pour the popcorn into a large bowl or paper sack. Season with half of the seasoned salt and stir. Taste before adding more salt if desired. Toss with bacon bits and shredded Cheddar cheese for an extra special treat. Store leftovers in lunch sacks or sandwich bags.

This, I'm guessing, will be a new Bacon Day classic

Chicken livers with Red wine and bacon

I love chicken livers, so this sounds like a winner to me, but I would understand if it doesn't show up at your bacon day.

Chicken Livers with red wine and bacon

serves 6

8 slices bacon, chopped
1 sweet onion, finely chopped
1 pound chicken livers, rinsed and trimmed
1 1/2 cups Burgundy or other dry red wine
1/4 cup chopped mushrooms

Fry the bacon over medium heat until crisp (or how ever you like your bacon). Remove bacon from the pan and pat dry on paper towels . Drain off grease from the pan leaving enough to cook the livers, onions, and bacon in.

Using the same pan, add the onions and mushrooms; cook and stir over medium heat until tender. Stir in the chicken livers, quickly browning them on the outside. Pour in the red wine, adding more if needed to cover the chicken livers. Cover, and simmer for 20 minutes. Just before serving, stir in the bacon. (next time I want to try maybe adding some cream to make it a bit of a thicker sauce, and maybe a table spoon of mustard as well after the simmering).

Bacon Cheese Dip

this recipe came from Southern Food

Ingredients:

16 slices bacon (about 12 ounces), diced, fried and well drained
16 ounces cream cheese, cubed, room temperature
4 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 cup half-and-half
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon dried minced onion
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
dash hot sauce
Preparation:

Put all ingredients in the slow cooker; cover and cook on low, stirring occasionally, for about 1 to 2 hours, until cheese is melted and mixture is hot. Taste and adjust seasonings, add bacon, and keep on low to serve. Serve with cubed or sliced French bread or other dippers.

Okay so this isn't strictly bacon, but it sounds amazing and why not replace the pancetta with some thinly sliced apple smoked bacon? I think that would taste amazingly. Here at Bacon Day we try to explore the depths of Bacon, but it's always good to be reminded of the classics. The Brazil Times (of Indiana) reminded us of Bacon Wrapped Cocktail Sausages. This makes me wonder how many more classic bacon dishes we've overlooked. There is always bacon wrapped prawns, and bacon wrapped steak. 60 days till Bacon Day

With only 60 days till Bacon Day we're trying to get a bunch of new and interesting recipes out there for you to try. I found this one the other day Bacon and Tomato jam from WRAL.com This sounds like an interesting twist. Maybe spread on a bagel with another slice or two of bacon, some lettuce and now you have a new and different BLT.

BACON AND TOMATO JAM
Start to finish: 2 hours (15 minutes active)
Makes 1 pint (sixteen 2-tablespoon servings)
1/2 pound smoked bacon
2 pounds very ripe tomatoes, cored and chopped
1 medium yellow onion, diced
1 cup sugar
2 1/2 tablespoons cider vinegar
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
In a large skillet over medium-high, cook the bacon until crispy, about 5 minutes. Transfer the bacon to paper towels to drain excess fat, blotting it dry with additional towels as needed.
In a large saucepan, combine the tomatoes, onion, sugar, cider vinegar, salt and pepper. Bring to a boil, stirring often, then reduce heat to medium. Crumble the bacon into the tomato mixture.
Simmer until very thick, about 1 hour. Season with salt and pepper, as needed.
Let the jam cool, then ladle into jars. Can be refrigerated for 3 to 4 days, or frozen for up to 2 months. If freezing, divide the jam among several small jars. When ready to use, let a jar thaw overnight in the refrigerator.
Nutrition information per 2-tablespoon serving (values are rounded to the nearest whole number): 58 calories; 27 calories from fat; 3 g fat (1 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 7 mg cholesterol; 6 g carbohydrate; 2 g protein; 0 g fiber; 266 mg sodium.

I wonder if you could use sun dried tomatoes and make it a bit more of a thick spread. Let us know what you think and please share your ideas for bacon recipes!

A True Bacon Dress

So we've reported on the bacon scarf, the bacon bra, the Bacon Tux, and now there is the bacon dress. This fashion statement is a one time wear that I'm not sure I'd wear for bacon day (the boys might try to throw me on the grill and eat it). I'm not sure how it would smell, but they claim that it made her popular with the opposite sex.

Another Bacon App

We got a post the other day about another bacon app for the ipod touch and iphone, iBacon. I haven't gotten it yet because it costs money, okay not much just $1.19, but I'm not sure I need a bacon app, they just make me hungary. Then again the sizzle of the bacon can be a lot of fun. So if you are bored in your office and want to be reminded about the sound of bacon, then this might be the game for you. If you decide to down load it let us know what you think!

Been Gone

Been gone, seen more of Oz, and had more bacon... on a secluded island. There is nothing better then a bacon and egg breakfast before a day of kayaking and snorkeling in the Coral Sea.

But now that the vacation is over, it's back to work and time to start preparing for Bacon Day 2009! First off if you need a bit of light reading about bacon check out Bacon Unwrapped's author Heather Lauer's new book "Bacon: a Love Story".

If you aren't sure where to get your bacon, or you want to try some specialty bacon, check out Rocco's Bacon Freak (He has another great bacon product rolling out that we will cover in a later post).

Need some Bacon Day Gear? That's all coming as well so keep an eye out of a post for that.

What about recipes? How can you have a whole day of eating bacon? That's the easy bit. We have a bunch of recipes here (check out the right hand side of the blog), but there are many other sites with bacon dishes. One of my favorites is The Bacon Show where they publish a new bacon recipe every day.

Rocco does it again

Rocco from Bacon Freak has done it again. He now is selling bacon covered chocolate. They almost look like turtles, or chocolate covered nut clusters. Hmmm I think I might have a new idea for a desert there. Also a heads up that the bacon boys have finally made a cold smoker and are working on their first batch of bacon. Okay two batches, they are doing a cure and a brine I believe, so we'll have updates on that soon as well.

Bacon and Coke

I'm not a huge soft drink fan, but if I was in the Seattle area, I think I might go and try out this concoction. Al Dente reports on a bacon, blue cheese, and coke desert nicked named cheese and crackers . I'm not sure I can picture the taste, and in all honesty, I'm not sure I want to, but it seems like one of those things that if some one gave it to you you would have to try at least for the experience.

Bacon has gone Green!

And this isn't the bad kind of green meaning that you have left your bacon for too long. There is now a Bacon Grease station in WI that you can use for your car, given that this is a car that runs off of biodiesel. Just think you could be driving across country with the smell of bacon. In Boulder CO there are busses that run off of vegetable biodiesel and when they pass you smell french fries and all you want is to find the nearest restaurant with french fries... Maybe this isn't the best idea, if you are traveling through the woods with a trail smelling of cooked pork, just think of the animals (or people) who would be running after you. Talk about bringing home the bacon.

Speaking of wonderful ideas check this out, it's not bacon, but it is funny.

Healthy Bacon!

I found this article and now I have a reason (or at least another) for eating bacon. Its good for me, it will help reduce any bad cholesterol! So now with 3 months to go until this years bacon day, I need to start deciding on the recipes that I plan to make. I have one friend who promises to give bacon cupcakes a go, another who is planning breakfast, another for bacon ice cream, so I guess I should maybe go for an exotic bacon main course. Maybe a bacon Kangaroo and Emu dish, or crocodile. I'm going to have to think about this one. Any ideas out there?

I didn't get swine flu, but I did get a case of adviser wanting to see a program working that just wasn't cooperating. There have been quite a few big announcements. First off Will Work For Bacon. Apparently these guys have started a group on Face Book where people can pledge $10.00 to help them open a restaurant dedicated to bacon. Knowing how much bacon is used on Bacon Day I can't even begin to think about the quantities of bacon needed for an restaurant dedicated to bacon.

The Second big piece of news is once again from Rocco (he always has such great things going on). With the onset of Swine Flu he has T-shirts stating "I Survived Swine Flu" Part of the proceeds go to charity.You get two options, either The Brain Project, or The Student Operated Press Both great causes chosen by Rocco. He also has a link to suggest other charities as well. And as always Rocco has many great gifts, and with Mothers day around the corner, it's not a bad place to be looking. Get some Maple Bacon Pancakes for Mom, and make them for breakfast on Mother's Day. Or there is always his gift baskets.

On the topic of Charities, remember CHAPS With out them we would never had known about Bacon Boy. They do wonderful work with kids and can use all the help you can give.

I would like to know when schools began serving bacon? Granted the schools I went to didn't serve breakfast (at least to my knowledge) but still if you notice the kids at Central Fulton (and a few of the other schools) are going to get bacon for breakfast. Man, I think I'll have to wake up early tomorrow and make breakfast myself. Maybe a nice bacon and egg breakfast burrito.

An odd story

So I found this in my crawl of the web for all things bacon. A story about St. George (Which today is his day April 23rd apparently). According to the independent there is a politician trying to align himself with this saint.

So who is this George guy? Well according to the independent some sources say that he was a prominent Christian during the time when the Roman Empire was still pagan and died in 303 AD. The question then becomes, why am I writing about this on a bacon blog... well that's because there is another story to George that the independent reports

A very different story is told is Edward Gibbon's Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire, first published in 1787. He alleged that George was "an odious priest", a crook from Cappadocia who was chased out of Palestine for selling dodgy bacon to the army, and fled to Egypt, adopted a new and growing brand of Christianity called Arianism, used that to as a lever to get himself appointed Archbishop of Alexandria in place of the genuinely saintly Athanasius the Great, and instigated a reign of such "cruelty and avarice" that he was lynched by the outraged citizens. However, Gibbon may have confused him with a man with the same or a similar name, who also came from Cappadocia.

Apparently this rise in bacon crime isn't a new thing. It's been going on for centuries. Maybe the next venture that the bacon guys can come up with is a safe for your bacon, or a bacon alarm devise.

Kiwi Bacon

After reading this article, I'm very intrigued to taste Kiwi bacon. I had no idea about their standards for living conditions of the pigs. This might take some investigatory work into finding imported N.Z. Bacon. MMMM Bacon. If there are any Kiwis out there who have first hand experience as to the differences between their bacon and any other, please let us know which tastes better, and where to find some for ourselves. Also the pizza recipe at the end of the article looks amazing (minus the egg).
