The big Pig debate
This is just too funny. A pig escaped from a truck on the way to the meat market in Arkansas, so the Arkansas Online has a new poll Spareribs or spare pig?

Bacon in Schools
I would like to know when schools began serving bacon? Granted the schools I went to didn't serve breakfast (at least to my knowledge) but still if you notice the kids at Central Fulton (and a few of the other schools) are going to get bacon for breakfast. Man, I think I'll have to wake up early tomorrow and make breakfast myself. Maybe a nice bacon and egg breakfast burrito.

An odd story
So I found this in my crawl of the web for all things bacon. A story about St. George (Which today is his day April 23rd apparently). According to the independent there is a politician trying to align himself with this saint.
So who is this George guy? Well according to the independent some sources say that he was a prominent Christian during the time when the Roman Empire was still pagan and died in 303 AD. The question then becomes, why am I writing about this on a bacon blog... well that's because there is another story to George that the independent reports
Apparently this rise in bacon crime isn't a new thing. It's been going on for centuries. Maybe the next venture that the bacon guys can come up with is a safe for your bacon, or a bacon alarm devise.

A very different story is told is Edward Gibbon's Decline And Fall Of The Roman Empire, first published in 1787. He alleged that George was "an odious priest", a crook from Cappadocia who was chased out of Palestine for selling dodgy bacon to the army, and fled to Egypt, adopted a new and growing brand of Christianity called Arianism, used that to as a lever to get himself appointed Archbishop of Alexandria in place of the genuinely saintly Athanasius the Great, and instigated a reign of such "cruelty and avarice" that he was lynched by the outraged citizens. However, Gibbon may have confused him with a man with the same or a similar name, who also came from Cappadocia.

Kiwi Bacon
After reading this article, I'm very intrigued to taste Kiwi bacon. I had no idea about their standards for living conditions of the pigs. This might take some investigatory work into finding imported N.Z. Bacon. MMMM Bacon. If there are any Kiwis out there who have first hand experience as to the differences between their bacon and any other, please let us know which tastes better, and where to find some for ourselves. Also the pizza recipe at the end of the article looks amazing (minus the egg).

I want one of these!
I saw this New York times article about a vending machine in Italy which makes pizza and guess what one of the choices was, bacon. This made me drool a bit, and I remember a cartoon of a bacon vending machine, and thought the future is finally here. So I went hunting for that cartoon and googled "bacon vending machine" and guess what I found at baconbaconbacon, a bacon vending machine. I never did find that cartoon, but this is sooo much better. Where are these machines, and how can I get one?
Oh and one more thing, I think I remember as a kid Pizza Hut having a Badger State (that's WI if you didn't know) special which included sausage, mushroom, cheddar cheese, and bacon. Does any one know if this still exists? I'm really craving one, and think that the bacon community should petition Pizza Hut to sell it at all its locations so that I can get it out here in Oz.

Why you should learn Math
I have no idea if this is true, but I am now motivated go find this out for myself. In an article about educating Briton from the Chicago Tribune, I found this quote.
If this is true, then eating bacon for a whole day once a year must be a miniscule addition to your health risks! Even the guys who did the bacon challenge haven't had that much of an increased risk. I love math!!! Okay so there may be other reasons not to eat it as much as one may desire, but at least now we know that it might not be as bad as once thought.

He (David Spiegelhalter, a University of Cambridge mathematician) points to eating bacon as a good test of statistical risk.
Scientists will tell you that eating a big serving of bacon every day will boost your colon cancer risk by a whopping 20 percent. But a 20 percent boost, in absolute terms, means your lifetime risk of developing colon cancer rises to 6 percent from 5 percent. For someone who adores bacon, that might be a risk worth taking

Bad Bacon
Yes there is such a thing, when it is outdated better safe then sorry. According to the New York Times there were at least 21 super markets fined for selling out dated items. Apparently bacon was one of the most commonly found food items sold after it's expiration date. Make sure to check the dates and don't just grab what you see, no matter how much it makes you drool.

Eat more bacon to save jobs in England
Okay so it might help if you are in England and North Yorkshire specifically, A meat processing plant is laying off some employees. Bacon is supposed to be the meat people turn to during recessions.
On the plus side, Jamie Oliver is running a program called Save our Bacon. So maybe the layoffs wont be necessary.

BACON BIT RECALL!!!
Some Bacon Bits are being recalled for possible contamination! Please check out the story on the capital times if you have bacon bits around.
Here is the important part of the story.

Here is the important part of the story.
The bacteria can cause a rare but potentially fatal disease to which infants, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are susceptible. Ten-pound cases of Golden Crisp and John Morrell applewood smoked precooked bacon toppings marked with "8318" are being recalled. They were produced in Cudahy, Wis., in November and distributed to restaurants and institutions in Wisconsin and five other states.

Breaking News
Okay so it's not really breaking news, but here is some election news. US News are reporting that Obama is beating McCain, by a slice of bacon, although when you look at the numbers I'd say it was a plateful, or even maybe a land slide... mmm a land slide of bacon... Good Stuff Eatery on capital hill have two sandwich specials, an Obama Burger and a McCain burger and as of today when they printed the article Obama was winning (selling more burgers) 717 to 257. The Burgers both sounds delicious.
When they asked the owner of the Good Stuff Eatery who he wanted to win he stated. "Well, the burger I put bacon in," A true Bacon Lover.

The Obama burger, which boasts bacon, blue cheese, onion marmalade, and horseradish mayo, is currently winning at 717 to 257. The McCain burger contains chipotle mayo, corn and roasted red pepper salsa, jack cheese, lettuce, and tomato.
Besides the obvious choice of ingredients with red and blue in the names, Chef Spike wanted to capture the candidates' personalities in their burgers. "We thought for McCain something a little more Tex-Mex, something a little more maverick, a little more spicy, and came up with a burger that would represent that," he told Whispers.

Another attack on Bacon
What is it this past month with people either using bacon poorly or mistreating it? So this time it comes from http://www.godhatesbacon.com/ In their long summary they state,
They have photos from their protests.
Enjoy,
Alexa and the Bacon Boys
In summary, people who eat bacon are wicked and sinners before the Lord exceedingly, are abominable to God (Lev. 11:7-8), are worthy of death for their vile, depraved, unnatural dietary practices (Lev. 20:4; Rom. 1:32), are called dogs because they are filthy and impudent (Mat. 7:6), declare their sin and shame on their countenance (Isa. 3:9), are shameless and unable to blush (Jer. 6:15), are workers of iniquity and hated by God (Psa. 5:5), are natural brute beasts (2 Pet. 2:12), are dogs eating their own vomit and sows wallowing in their own feces (2 Pet. 2:22), will proliferate at the end of the world bringing final judgment on mankind (Lk. 17:28-30), have been finally given up by God to uncleanness dishonoring their own bodies among themselves, to vile affections, and to a reprobate mind such that they cannot think straight about anything (Rom. 1:23-28), must be pulled from the fire (Jude 23), and have no hope of Heaven unless they repent (Rev. 22:15), which they can't do in their prideful state (Jer. 6:15). They need to hear this truth if they are to have any hope of penitence, faith in Jesus Christ and salvation (I Timothy 4:2-4).

Jamie Oliver's preposed show
I don't know if any one else out there caught the Jamie Oliver special on healthy eating or on the state of chicken farms (I couldn't watch that one), but now he has another special planed for pork. The Farmers Guardian has a very short article on this possibility.

The Perfect NZ
I found this article by N.H. Maclean the other day and it has a list of events which will let us know that the Golden Age has dawned. In this list there are such things like tax breaks, a falling price of food, and then there is this

Breaking News, Bacon comes from Pigs
Or so the Gothamist has informed me. Okay so this isn't quiet breaking news, but if you are in the New York area, you can see Tom Mylan butcher a pig and also get 8 lbs of pork goodness for $75. I'm not sure how I feel about watching my bacon being cut from a pig, but it could be a fun field trip some year for Bacon Day, if I lived in the NY area. If you have attended one of these functions, let us know how it went and what you thought of the experience.
